Kodan Spotlight: Santtu's Strategic Mastery Elevates Him in the World of Squash
Kodan Spotlight is a series of blog posts introducing our employees through their passions. This time in the spotlight is our software developer Santtu Puurunen.
"When I reflect on my beginnings with squash, I'm instantly transported back to the age of 8, forced into the sport by my mother's insistence. Though my very first encounter with a squash hall was as an infant, the true embrace of the sport was anything but immediate. At the outset, my reluctance to attend practice sessions stemmed from the physical demands of the sport, which seemed overwhelming due to my initial fitness level and the added complication of asthma.
Yet, the spark of enthusiasm ignited within me. The sport transitioned from an obligation to an eagerly awaited challenge. At around the age of 16, with a new sense of enthusiasm, I began to approach training with a precision and dedication fitting an athlete.
Squash revealed itself to be far more than just a physical endeavor; as strategy plays a big part in the game and having to make the decisions in split second times feels invigorating. The discipline has been a method for maintaining exceptional physical health, yet what truly captivates me is the intellectual chess match that plays out within each game. There lies a thrill in the strategizing, a rush in unlocking the secrets to outmaneuvering an opponent.
While my passion for the sport only deepened, the intense nature of squash is not to be underestimated. It is a demanding exercise, consuming a lot of energy in, limiting the frequency of my pursuits with the racket and ball.
The extent of my squash hobby has seen its ebbs and flows of competition. Though there was a time when tournaments were a focal point, I now find myself participating in them less frequently. Among the accolades I have claimed, the most significant has been the Finnish B-class championship— a testament to the hours spent refining my craft.
One unexpected benefit in my squash journey has been with managing my asthma. The rigorous nature of the sport has not only bolstered my fitness but also nurtured my respiratory health, a tandem benefit that I never anticipated when first stepping onto the court.
For those who crave a robust anaerobic workout and aren't afraid of the next day's soreness that attests to a session well played, squash is an endeavor I wholeheartedly recommend. It's an enthralling mix of physical rigor and mental gymnastics, perfect for anyone looking to sharpen both their body and wit. Whether you're seeking competition or just having a fun game with friends, squash offers a challenge that resonates both on and off the court."
